Ghana U-20 captain Lawrence Lartey says his team aims to beat Uganda this weekend to lessen the pain of the nation following the death of President John Atta-Mills.

The 68-year-old law professor died on Tuesday after taking ill a few hours earlier - throwing the whole nation into a state of deep sorrow and mourning.

The Black Satelites thus aim to ease the sorrow of Ghanaians by recording a positive result in Navikubo where they play the Hippos in the first leg of the African Youth Championship qualifier on Saturday.

“Actually, for now we are all mourning because of the death of our President so we shouldn’t add any more sorrow to the people of Ghana,” Lartey told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“So I hope by the Grace we put the smiles back on the faces of Ghanaians by getting the result there.

“We are already in pain, so going there and coming back with nothing will make the pain double, it will be horrible to the people of Ghana so we aim to do something positive there.

“We have done enough in terms of preparations so what we need now is the support and prayers of Ghanaians and hopefully we can even win there.”

Ghana is looking to reclaim its lost glory at this level after a string of unimpressive displays in recent years.

The Black Satelites won Africa’s first World Cup in 2009 in Egypt.
