Ghanaian players dominate list of African players with the most Champions League titles

Ghanaian players dominate the list of African players to have won Europe's biggest football competition the UEFA Champions League since 1983.

The tournament has seen 24 African players winning the title with Ghana dominating the list with four players, followed by Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire on three players each.

One of Ghana's greatest footballer and three-time African footballer of the Year, Abedi Ayew Pele was the first Ghanaian to win the trophy with French giants Olympique de Marseille in the 1992/92 season. Marseille defeated AC Milan by alone goal the final to win the trophy.

Bayern Munich legend Samuel Osei Kuffur after losing the final to Manchester United in 1998 helped his side to lift the trophy in the 2000/01 season. Bayern defeated Spanish side Valencia on penalties to win the trophy.

Jose Mourinho's treble-winning squad with Inter Milan in 2010 included Ghanaian International Sulley Muntari. A key figure in the team as he helped the Italian side to both domestic and continental glory.

Inter Milan defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in that final to win the trophy.

Michael Essien after a blistering career with the English giants won his first and only Champions League trophy with Chelsea during the twilight of his career.

Essien is the last Ghanaian to have won the UEFA Champions League trophy with a team in Europe in the last decade.

He is also the fourth Ghanaian among the list of Africans to have won the trophy.
