Ghana midfielder Alfred Duncan climbed from the bench to provide an assist during Fiorentina's 3-1 defeat against Sassuolo in the Serie A on Wednesday.

Duncan has not found life smooth since joining the Viola from Sassuolo on loan in January.

The Ghana international was benched in the side's 2-1 loss against high-flying Lazio over the weekend after playing 67 minutes in the previous week against Brescia.

He was expected to return to the starting line-up against his former side at the Artemio Franchi in midweek.

But coach Beppe Iachini omitted the 27-year-old from his starting line-up as he opted for Gaetano Castrovilli, Erick Pulgar and Rachid Ghezzal in a three-man midfield.

However, Sassuolo drew first blood in the 24th minute through Gregoire Defrel's perfect penalty before adding a second just 11 minutes later.

Turkish defender Mert Muldur took the game beyond the hosts with a smart finish in the 61st minute.

With the game slipping away from Fiorentina, coach Iachini called upon Duncan to replace Castrovilli in the 64th minute.

Duncan made his mark in the match by providing a perfect-inch cross for Patrick Cutrone to nod home a consolation in the 90th minute.

The loss saw Fiorentina retain their 13th place with 31 points while Sassuolo consolidated their 12th position with 37 points.
