Giroud 'set to stay at Chelsea a little longer after negotiations over new deal'

Olivier Giroud could be set to stay at Chelsea a little longer after opening preliminary negotiations over a new contract, according to reports.

For much of the season, Giroud had been playing second fiddle to Tammy Abraham under Frank Lampard and he was expected to be let go this summer with his contract expiring in June.

However, the Frenchman has recently turned his fortunes around and has impressed in the place of the injured Abraham up top at Stamford Bridge.

And according to Football London, talks have begun to see if an extension can be found past this summer - when his current deal runs out.

However, no agreement is likely until the UK's coronavirus lockdown measures are eased.

Chelsea's starting position would likely be to offer the French World Cup winner a new one-year contract - in line with their policy regarding older players.

However, it is not yet clear whether 33-year-old Giroud would accept this short-term offer and instead hold out for a longer deal.

Giroud came close to leaving Stamford Bridge in January after very restricted game time, with Inter Milan keeping close tabs on the striker.

A move failed to come to fruition but that hasn't deterred the Serie A outfit from going back in for him again this summer, with Antonio Conte keen to reunite with Giroud if Chelsea contract talks stall.
