Great Olympics captain Gladson Awako has lamented on his failure to secure a move to Europe after helping Ghana to win the 2009 U-20 FIFA World Cup.

Awako was one of several Ghana U-20 players who were tipped to take world football by storm in the wake of their triumph at the Youth Championship in Egypt.

Now 29, Awako had trials at Tottenham, Monaco and Inter Milan but failed to secure a deal.

He later landed a contract at Spanish side Recreativo Huelva but did not play a single game and returned to Ghana to re-sign for Heart of Lions.

According to the diminutive midfielder, he feels disappointed to have failed to secure those moves very early in his career.

“I am disappointed because I had chances to travel outside to train with some European clubs like Tottenham, Inter Milan, Monaco, but it didn’t happen the way I wished. However, I still moved on and I believe that things will get better,” he told Pulse Ghana.

After a year at Hearts of Lions, he moved to Berekum Chelsea where he won the Ghana Premier League in 2011 and reached the group stages of the CAF Champions League in 2012.

Awako later joined Congolese giants Tout Puissant Mazembe in 2012.

He returned to the Ghana Premier League in 2019 after a spell with US Championship side Phoenix Rising.
