Griezmann's Barcelona exit: A question of survival

Published on: 18 May 2021

Antoine Griezmann is one of the players that Barcelona are open to selling this summer, not because they are especially disappointed with his performances but because they need funds and the Frenchman is seen as a sellable asset.

With planning for the 2021/22 season well underway the Blaugrana know they need to improve the squad, but they have few resources to work with, meaning some adjustments will need to be made.

Thus, a number of players have been earmarked as possible sales and income generators when the transfer window opens.

Most of the names on that list aren't particularly surprising and are players who haven't featured as much or performed as well as hoped, such as Samuel Umtiti, Junior Firpo, Matheus Fernandes and Martin Braithwaite.

Griezmann's case is different, however, as the coaching staff are pleased with his contribution and he has been an important player for Ronald Koeman this season, with 18 goals and 12 assists.

The 30-year-old will be shopped for purely economic reasons, with the club hoping to recoup some of the 120 million euros they paid for him and avoid continuing to pay his high salary, which increases year on year.

All that said, however, the France international's future, like so much at the Camp Nou, is dependent on Lionel Messi's situation.

If Messi goes, the club may well opt to retain Griezmann, partly because the Argentine's wages would be off the books and also to not lose a player of his experience, talent and presence in the dressing room.
