Asamoah Gyan believes Ghana can still go on to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations despite being held by DR Congo.
The Black Stars surrendered a two goal lead to finish their opening Group B fixture with a disappointing 2-2 draw.
Goals from Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and Kwadwo Asamoah in each half appeared to have set Ghana well on its way to registering an expected win against the Leopards.
However strikes from Tresor Mputu and Dieudonne Mbokani ensured the winless run of the tournament in South Africa was further extended in the first game on Sunday.
The result definitely not the flying start Ghanaians were hoping for and has now cast a huge doubt in the minds of people who saw the Black Stars as one of the favourites to win the competition.
But captain Asamoah Gyan insists the side can still go on to end their 31-year wait for an African title – drawing inspiration from Spain’s 2010 World Cup feat.
“Things happen in the game, things have happened to past the champions,†he told MTNFootball.com after the disappointing draw against the DRC.
“Talking about Spain – they lost their first game and they came back to win the World Cup (in 2010).
“In tournaments like these things happen but what we have to do is to go and correct our mistakes and make sure we win our second game.â€
Ghana now desperately need a result against Mali in the second group game on Thursday to maintain their title ambitions.
The Black Stars will thereafter face Niger to wrap up their group campaign in Port Elizabeth.
