Asamoah Gyan was unable to help his Sunderland side secure even a point against their cross town neighbours, Newcastle on Saturday.
An expertly taken free kick by midfielder Ryan Taylor proved enough to hand all three points and the bragging rights at Wearside to the Magpies.
The result leaves the Black Cats in 13th on the league standings after two games following their impressive opening day draw away to Liverpool last week.
Though shaking off an injury to play the full duration of the game, Gyan failed to make a meaningful impact after being impressively marshaled by Newcastle’s Fabricio Collocini in defence.
Sunderland next takes on newly promoted Swansea as they go in search of their first win in the brand new campaign.
