Holland star De Ligt SENT OFF for cynical handball to stop Patrick Shick

Holland defender Matthijs De Ligt has caused calamity for his team by being sent off for deliberate handball in their round-of-16 tie against Czech Republic.

The Juventus centre-back was back-peddling to deal with a ball in behind with Czech striker Patrik Schick bearing down on him, when he lost his footing.

Schick looked certain to have a goal-scoring opportunity inside the penalty area when De Ligt cynically flung out a hand and stopped the ball.

Referee Sergei Karasev initially gave De Ligt a yellow card to the fury of the Czech players, when VAR referee Stuart Atwell told him to review his decision on the screen.

Having gone to the monitor to look at the incident again, Karasev overturned his decision and sent De Ligt off.

ITV commentator Ally McCoist felt De Ligt was in trouble as soon as VAR checked the decision.

'I'm saying yes (he stopped a goalscoring opportunity),' he said. 'Patrik Shick was through with (goal-keeper Maarten) Stekelenburg to beat.'
