Home-based players to get Ghana AFCON places

Ghana deputy coach Akwasi Appiah claims quite a sizeable number of home-based players will make the final cut for next year's Africa Cup of Nations.

Local-based goalkeepers Daniel Agyei and Ernest Sowah are among the likely candidates to make the final cut.

Kotoko striker Nathaniel Asamoah, Emmanuel Clottey of Berekum Chelsea, Rashid Sumaila and Yaw Frimpong have all gained call-ups under Goran Stevanovic.

There is widespread reports that the Serbian trainer may opt for just Europe-based players for the tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

But his deputy claims there will be a few players from the local league who will make the team ahead of the tournament.

"I have heard a lot of people talk about the fact that we have decided not to call up any local player. That is absolutely false because some players who have impressed so far will get the chance," Appiah said.

"The door has not been shut on any local player. We are still monitoring and I can assure you that there will some of them in the team.

"The coach obviously won't call any player that he is not seen perform but trust me he eyes are on the ground and he'll call up the best players for the nation which includes those in Ghana."

Stevanovic will name his final 23-man squad on 15 December.
