How do Dortmund and Bayern rank against each other ahead of showdown?

Published on: 26 May 2020

It will be a unique 'Der Klassiker' when Borussia Dortmund host Bayern Munich in a crucial title clash on Tuesday.

There'll be no yellow wall creating its electric atmosphere with fans forced to cheer on their teams at home. But the match itself still carries a huge amount of importance.

A victory for Dortmund will take them to within a point of the champions with six games to go, but if Bayern triumph they will widen that margin to seven. Sportsmail takes a look at the key battle areas and ranks how the two sides compare against one another.

Goal-scoring firepower

Bayern - 9/10

As the leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the German Cup, Robert Lewandowski shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

The striker has scored 40 goals or more in his last five seasons after netting his 41st for the current campaign against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Polish international averages a goal every 72.7 minutes and even has more Bundesliga goals than Fortuna Dusseldorf.

In addition to that crazy stat, he's also netted more times in the Champions League than 17 teams to qualify for the competition, including Dortmund and Barcelona.

He needs just three more strikes to make this his most prolific season ever.

Dortmund - 8.5/10

Few players have caused as much excitement as Erling Haaland this season.

The teenage sensation joined Dortmund in January and has already netted 10 times in the Bundesliga.

He also has 41 goals for the 2019-2020 season and there's little to choose between him and Lewandowski.

It's perhaps more impressive that the Norwegian is producing the same scoring rate as the 31-year-old at the age of 19.

However, the Bayern frontman's multiple years of Der Klassiker experience may prove crucial in this tie.

Haaland had a quieter afternoon during Dortmund's victory over Wolfsburg at the weekend and both he and his team-mates will need to take their performance up a level if they are to match the champions.

Veteran defenders

Bayern - 7.5/10

There's little separating the defensive units of each team with Dortmund having three more clean sheets but conceding five more goals.

Lucas Hernandez has spent the majority of the season injured which has seen David Alaba and Jerome Boateng as first-choice centre backs for much of the campaign.

Hernandez is now fit again and replaced Boateng on Saturday after the German limped off injured and it is uncertain whether he will be available to play on Tuesday.

The rotation is far from ideal for the leaders who lost a bit of their defensive composure in the second half against Frankfurt. Two quick goals from the visitors threatened to jeopardise their 3-0 lead.

Hansi Flick's side were fortunate their opponents were generous in their own defensive complacencies.

Dortmund - 7.5/10

Dortmund's veteran centre back Mats Hummels could also be absent from the match after picking up an injury against Wolfsburg.

But the title-chasers have been more solid since the return of football than their opponents with two clean sheets in their opening fixtures.

Emre Can is a capable replacement but Dortmund will want the experienced Hummels fit to face Lewandowski.

The defender will also want to make up for the own goal he scored in the reverse fixture at the Allianz Arena in November.

Midfield creativity

Bayern - 7.5/10

The league leaders are not short of options in the creativity department. The ever-present Thomas Muller has continued his impressive record of assists with 17 in the current campaign.

The 30-year-old has been in excellent form since featuring more heavily under Flick and has also weighed in with seven goals.

Central midfielders Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka have seven and six assists as well as six goals between them.

Dortmund - 8/10

Thorgan Hazard has looked in determined mood since football's return this month with a goal and two assists in the first two games back.

This gives the Belgian a total of six goals and 12 assists, a good return in his first season with Dortmund after making the move from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer.

Julian Brandt was particularly impressive as Lucien Favre's side breezed past Schalke, setting up two of the four goals and linking up much of Dortmund's attacking play.

Both players have started this period of football well but one is likely to drop out of the starting XI if Jadon Sancho is fit enough to start.

Electric wide-men

Bayern - 8/10

Serge Gnabry has already bettered his stats for last season with 11 league goals and 10 assists.

The winger was left out of the starting line-up for Bayern's win over Frankfurt, perhaps to keep him fresh to face Dortmund, but he did come off the bench to help force Martin Hinteregger into an own goal.

The winger has showed his quality on numerous occasions this season, most notably his four-goal destruction of Spurs in the Champions League.

With Dortmund having attack-minded full backs, Gnabry will look to get in behind to exploit any gaps they may leave.

Dortmund - 9/10

Dortmund will be desperately hoping Sancho will be fit enough to start after coming off the bench in their last two fixtures.

The England international is the most wanted man in world football and has the ability to be Dortmund's match-winner.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed another sensational season with 14 goals and 17 assists in 25 league games.

The winger showed what a difference he can make by grabbing an assist for Dortmund's second goal at the weekend, with Wolfsburg powerless to stop him from ghosting through their defence.

He is the player Bayern will be most worried about ahead of the title clash.

Powerful full-backs

Bayern - 9/10

Alphonso Davies made headlines with a stunning individual performance as Bayern thrashed Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. He was also on top form at the weekend, grabbing a goal and assist in Bayern's 5-2 victory over Frankfurt.

The 19-year-old has shone in his first full season as the No 1 left back and has managed two goals and nine assists in all competitions.

However, his opportunities to get forward may be limited if finds himself tasked with keeping Sancho quiet for the 90 minutes.

Dortmund - 9/10

With Favre favouring a 3-4-3 formation, Dortmund's Raphael Guerreiro and Achraf Hakimi operate as wing backs and are given licence to roam forward.

Both were on the scoresheet at the weekend and have impressive stats for the current campaign.

Guerreiro has eight goals and three assists in the league while Hakimi has four goals and 10 assists.

If Bayern's attentions are drawn inside towards Sancho, the pair will look to exploit the champions out wide with Haaland the perfect target to be aiming for.
