Asamoah Gyan's much-awaited return to the Ghana Premier League has been confirmed.
The legendary striker has signed for the not so popular club, Legon Cities FC. The move confirms his return to the Ghanaian top-flight, 17 years after his departure.
His illustrious career started in 2003 in the Ghana Premier League where he played for Liberty Professionals.
As a teenager, Gyan scored 10 goals in 16 games. The numbers were impressive so secured a move abroad without completing the season.
Since leaving Ghana, Gyan has achieved so much and is rated as one of the best players from the continent of Africa.
He featured for the likes of Udinese, Modena, Rennes, Sunderland in the Premier League, Kayserispor, Shanghai SIPG and Al Ahli.
However, his best spell abroad was in the United Arab Emirates with Al Ain. Gyan was absolutely unplayable in the league, scoring week in week out. He spent four years in UAE and won the league golden boot three times.
But Gyan has finally decided to come home. Many had thought he would sign for Asante Kotoko, having expressed his desire to play for the Porcupine Warriors before he ends his career.
Gyan, in recent interviews, reiterated his claim but the Porcupine Warriors have sat idle for Legon Cities FC to sign him.
Kotoko fans would be disappointed but his return seems to be good news for all stakeholders of the league.
Gyan is a huge brand. On the football side, his brand is attractive because his career has been a success, commanding respect both locally and internationally.
His inclusion in the league will help in securing lucrative sponsors. The league in recent years has struggled to attract sponsors but with Gyan available, corporate organisations wouldn't hesitate to invest hugely in the league because they will most likely be benefits.
Also, interest in the league will increase as people will be monitoring Gyan. Since he has not announced his retirement from the Black Stars, people will be eager to see if he can still be of help to the national team.
Increase in stadium attendance. With Gyan, he can attract huge numbers at games. All 18 clubs will make money from gate proceeds if Gyan is in action.
Hopefully, Gyan stays fit and meets the expectations of his club and Ghanaians.
