How Pablo Sarabia has become a leader at Sevilla FC

Published on: 06 December 2018

Jorge Sampaoli, Eduardo Berizzo, Vincenzo Montella, Joaquin Caparros and Pablo Machin. All of the coaches who have had the opportunity to manage Pablo Sarabia at Sevilla FC have remarked on the quality of the Spaniard and his intelligence when adapting to a number of different positions on the pitch.

Since he arrived at Sevilla in the summer of 2016 the Spanish midfielder has continually grown as player and staked his claim as one of the first names on the team sheet. He has played as a wing-back on both flanks, as a wide midfielder on both flanks and has even played further up the pitch as a more traditional striker. Sarabia is defensively solid in any position thanks to his tactical reading of the game and his hard work, and he is capable of producing an attacking threat thanks to his speed and his excellent dribbling and shooting ability.

Pablo Sarabia is the player who has given his team the most points through goals and assists this season in LaLiga Santander: 11 points.

The Sevilla player has netted six goals and provided four assists in LaLiga Santander 2017/18, a fundamental contribution to keeping his side in the upper echelons of the league table. So decisive has Sarabia been that he is the player who has given his team the most points (11) through goals and assists in all of LaLiga Santander.

If we take into account his performance throughout the full calendar year of 2018, the Spaniard is up there with the very best midfielders in the division. These are the midfielders who have contributed the most to their team finding the back of the net in LaLiga Santander in 2018:

    Coutinho: 12 goals + 6 assists Sarabia: 9 goals + 8 assists Morales: 10 goals + 7 assists Ibai: 6 goals + 6 assists Canales: 7 goals + 5 assists Portu: 8 goals + 4 assists

As we can see, if we add up all of the goals and assists produced in LaLiga Santander in 2018, only Philippe Coutinho has bettered Sarabia's figures out of all of the midfielders, with the Sevilla player also on a par with 'El Comandante' Morales.

Sarabia's link-up play with Jesus Navas (214 passes) and Ever Banega (203), the teammates he interacts with the most, are the basis of the attacking play of Machin's side. In his team, Sarabia is the player who has played the most passes in the opposing half: an average of 22.2 per game. In this regard, if we compare him with the rest of the league he has only been outdone by Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Jordi Alba, Marco Asensio and Sergio Canales.

Sevilla have topped LaLiga Santander 2018/19 on three occasions, having won eight games this campaign, a feat only matched by FC Barcelona. Machin's bold football is producing excellent results for the club, and thanks to Sarabia and co. they will not be tempering their aspirations in what remains of the season.
