Hughes hints at more signings

Published on: 23 July 2018

Southampton manager Mark Hughes is keen to bring more new players to the club but admits there may also be some outgoings.

Hughes has brought defender Jannik Vestergaard, forward Mohamed Elyounoussi, midfielder Stuart Armstrong and goalkeeper Angus Gunn to St Mary's this summer while Dusan Tadic has joined Ajax.

"We will probably have to sell or allow players to go out of the club if we're likely to bring anybody in now I would think," Hughes said.

"We've done OK. We have done early business which we are pleased about but you are always on the lookout."

Southampton only just avoided relegation last season, eventually finishing 17th after winning a crucial match at Swansea City, and Hughes has said that the squad needed revitalising.

The former Wales, Manchester City and Stoke City boss added: "We've still got a couple of weeks before the start of the season and things present themselves as we know. We have to be ready if we are able to get in the right type of player who can help us.

"I think players and agents will have to understand that once our window closes nobody is going out. That is going to be our stance."

Southampton, 7/4 to finish in the top half of the Premier League table in 2018/19 are 10/11 to beat Burnley at St Mary's in their first match of the campaign on 11th August.
