Akwasi Appiah is filled with delight after being named coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.

The 51-year-old after weeks of searching was on Monday appointed the substantive coach of the side that failed to meet the expectation of Nations Cup triumph in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea - leading to the sacking of Serbian Goran Stevanovic.

Though the terms and duration of his contract is still being negotiated, the former Black Stars captain has agreed in principle to take up the most sought after footballing job on the land and says he is humbly appreciative of the opportunity given.

“It is always an honour to be called upon to serve your nation and as you know I have been assistant for some time now and was always looking forward to the day I will get to this position,” he told Kumasi-based Angel FM.

“The Black Stars is the number one team of Ghana and I am very happy to have been done the honour with this appointment.

“The most important thing now is to forge a solid team in going forward and therefore I would ask for the support of each and every individual to ensure we succeed.”

Appiah who led Ghana’s U-23 team to an historic gold medal at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique will be out-doored to the media at an organized press conference on April 17 at the Ghana FA headquarters in Accra.
