AZ Alkmaar striker Myron Boadu was hoping to strut his stuff at the 2020 European Championship but understands why the tournament has been postponed because of the coronavirus.

The 22-year-old was rewarded for his purple patch of scoring form by being named in Holland's preliminary squad.

Boadu, born to Ghanaian parents in Amsterdam, will have to wait until 2021 to play his first major senior international tournament.

"That is a shame, of course. But health is the most important thing. The pre-selection does show that the national team coach has confidence in me,'' Boadu said on the club's website.

''After two years of injury, I have been in the spotlight with the general public this season.

''Whether I am satisfied with 22 goals and 13 assists in 42 official matches? I think it could and should have been more. But I am not dissatisfied."
