Erik ten Hag has admitted that he likes Luke Shaw’s ‘honesty’ and claimed that Shaw’s right approach to the game has helped him rediscover his top form.

Shaw underperformed in the first two games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford in the Premier League this season and he acknowledged that he was poor in both games.

Erik ten Hag took action by dropping him and others who underperformed in the first two games and his position was occupied by new signing Tyrell Malacia.

United won these games against Liverpool, Southampton, Arsenal and Leicester City without his services and Shaw understood Ten Hag’s decision to bench him.

Weeks after Shaw’s tough start to the season, the former Southampton defender is currently one of Ten Hag’s regular starters and he impressed again as a centre-back against Manchester City last weekend.

Ten Hag was pleased with how Shaw took responsibility for his poor form early in the season and said he loves the Englishman’s honesty about his form.

“I like that he’s so honest. After the second game [this season] he didn’t play and said ‘I fully understand, my performance is not right’,” said Ten Hag.

“You can see when he [Shaw] has the right approach he’s a top player. I don’t mean only as a team player, he’s a leader. He’s shown a lot of leadership capacities – he’s the example at the moment – with his skills and with his physical power he brings a lot to the team.

“He’s [Shaw] an example of how to win big games. I’m really happy with his development. I think it’s been huge either at centre-half or left full-back, he’s a great player and a great personality for the dressing room.”
