Bonzi has excellent indoor hard-court stats this season. He won the indoor Challenger at Cherbourg at the start of the year and then reached the semi-finals at another indoor tournament in Marseille. However, I don’t think he will be able to cope with Rune.
We don’t need to underestimate Rune, who already has two trophies to his credit this year. We think we’re in for a long match, which could well stretch over three sets.
Rune had a very strong spring season, which at one point put him in the top 30.
Holger took the title in Munich and reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and the semi-finals in Lyon.
These successes seem to have turned the 19-year-old tennis player’s head a bit. He did not win a single match in June and July but has been active in interviews in which he has repeatedly declared that he will win several Grand Slam tournaments in the coming years.
In August, Holger reached one round in Washington and the Masters in Montreal.
At the US Open, Rune reached the third round. The Danish tennis player then lost to Cameron Norrie (5-7, 4-6, 1-6).
Rune has lost seven of his previous ten matches.
Bonzi, meanwhile, started the tournament with a victory over Ugo Humbert (6-2, 2-6, 6-1). Benjamin took the first set easily, gave up the second set almost without a struggle, and dominated the decisive set again, giving up just one game.
Bonzi lost three matches in the Davis Cup last week. The Frenchman lost to Jan-Lennard Struff (4-6, 6-2, 5-7), Alex De Minaur (3-6, 6-1, 4-6) and David Goffin (3-6, 7-5, 3-6).
Bonzi did not win any matches in Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati in August, but reached the quarter-finals at Winston-Salem and the second round at the US Open.
Bonzi has nine wins in his last ten matches at the indoor hard courts.
