13:55 Kempton – Daydream @ 25/1 (each-way)

The opening race at Kempton on Tuesday afternoon is a typically competitive looking Class 6 handicap; however, one runner who could potentially outrun his hefty price-tag is Tony Newcombe’s Daydream.

This lightly-raced filly hasn’t really shown much to date, but didn’t run completely without promise when recently returning to action over 5f at Wolverhampton 11 days ago.

Having been off the track for 242 days, the four-year-old acquitted herself reasonably well in 6th place, keeping on well at the finish. With that run under her belt, it wouldn’t be a surprise if she was capable of showing improved form, while the step up to 6f looks to be in favour too.

In terms of quality, this contest is probably slightly less demanding than that of last time out, so if she is capable of coming forward in terms of her performance then 25/1 could easily be too big.

For connections who go fairly well at this venue, Daydream probably doesn’t deserve to be quite as big in the betting in a contest such as this and she’s worth chancing each-way.

15:05 Kempton – Outer Space @ 12/1 (each-way)

If the race above was competitive, you’d probably have to come up with a whole new word for the 15:05 Class 3 event. Of the 14 runners, a case could be made, one way or another, for the majority, although Jamie Osbourne’s Outer Space is particularly interesting.

On some of his best form, the six-year-old looks as though he should have as good a chance as anything in this field. Twice a winner at this track (once over C&D), he’s run with plenty of credit just about every time he’s gone around here at this level.

While he’s only won on the all-weather on two occasions, he’s certainly been there or thereabouts at the business end more often than not. From five Class 3 runs at Kempton his record currently reads: 3rd, 4th, 3rd,1st , 4th – all of which came in fields of ten or bigger. If we were to narrow the criteria down to Class 3 records over 7f at Kempton we’d get figures of 1st and 4th (beaten less than a length).

It’s also well worth noting that Outer Space has visited the winners enclosure both times that Jamie Spencer has previously taken the ride. Spencer and Osbourne’s 26% strike rate at this venue also bodes very well.

Admittedly the gelding hasn’t been seen on track for 164 days, although he has previously run well after a similar break.

Obviously this is the sort of contest where the difference between winning and running respectably is likely to be a small one indeed and several have a decent chance, but at odds of 12/1, given his profile, it’s hard to argue that Outer Space isn’t overpriced.

For a jockey and trainer combination who tend to do very well at Kempton, there’s plenty to like about Outer Space and he could easily run a big race for each-way supporters.
