He defeated Laslo Dere (2-6, 7-6, 7-6), Karen Khachanov (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) and Miomir Kecmanovic (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) in only three sets. In the final, Novak had no idea what to do against Andrey Rublev (2-6, 7-6, 0-6).
Gael Monfils:
The Madrid Masters is Monfils’ first clay tournament of the season. Prior to this, the Frenchman had played exclusively on hard court. Despite this, Gael made it through the first round with confidence. In the opening match, he defeated Carlos Jimeno Valero (6-3, 6-0).
