Published on: 01 May 2022

AshantiGold SC continued their rejuvenated form in the Ghana Premier League as they thrashed Berekum Chelsea 5-1 at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on Sunday.

In-form Yaw Annor scored four of the goals as he got his second hatrick of the season and second hatrick in the last two home games for the Miners.

Already gunning for Player of the Month of April where he scored 4 goals in 4 matches, Annor has started the new month on the high.

He is now on 16 goals and is just two behind leading top scorer Franck Mbella Etouga who has 18 goals for Asante Kotoko SC.

AshantiGold interim coach Thomas Duah made just two alterations to the team that pipped Great Olympics with a 1-0 scoreline last week at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Frank Akoto returned to his defensive duties having come in for Derrick Atta Afriyie after recovering a slight knock which kept him out in the last round.

Midfielder Stephen Nyarko was handed his third starting berth of the season as replaced Dauda Yussif Seidu.

After over a year and half absence with an injury, Appiah McCarthy made his first appearance in front of the home fans this season coming from the bench.

Chelsea stand-in head coach Solomon Odwo made two changes to the side that beat Aduana Stars 1-0 in Berekum last week.

Nana Yaw Afriyie continud to operate in between the sticks in the absence of first choice goalie Gregory Obeng Sekeyere who is currently with the Ghana U20 team.

Zacheaus Ndego was given the nod to start ahead of Emmanuel Sarpong who was relegated to the bench whilst Collins Ameyaw took the place of Prince Anane in the starting lineup.

Yaw Annor broke the deadlock of the match in the 12th minute after his shot from close range took a deflection to beat Chelsea goalkeeper Afriyie taking his tally in the season to 13 goals.

The visitors drew level in the 24th minute through Owusu Osei who benefited from a huge goalkeeping blunder by Dennis Votere after fumbling to hold onto a loose ball.

AshantiGold restored their lead on the stroke of halftime as Eric Esso slotted home a brilliant backheel pass from Tesrand Richard Emerys.

Annor got his second goal of the afternoon to increase the tally for the Miners in the 73rd minute.

Annor scored twice in two minutes in the 86th and 88th minute respectively to complete the drubbing for AshantiGold who made it four matches unbeaten in the league.
