2022 World Cup: Ghana coach Otto Addo confident Ghana can spring surprises

Published on: 18 May 2022

Ghana coach Otto Addo is confident his young charges can pull surprises at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars have drawn old foes Uruguay and Portugal as well as the Asian giants South Korea in a tricky group at the global showpiece in Qatar.

The stakes are high for the four-time African champions as they prepare to take on the rest of the world.

But Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Otto Addo admits advancing past the group stage will be tough but confident his young players can spring a surprise.

"Our group is certainly not easy, that's for sure. But I think the teams are balanced, apart from maybe Portugal, who will of course be extremely difficult to play against," Addo told Transfermarkt

"In retrospect, no World Cup went as experts had predicted beforehand – so I approach the tasks relatively impartially and I can tell you quite honestly: anything is possible.

"We have a strong squad and I'm convinced that the team can throw up a few surprises – but if things go badly in a group it's easy to end up with three defeats."

He remained coy on the players who could make the final squad list for the global showpiece.

"That always depends on the success of the team. But we certainly have several young players with us who could attract the attention of a wider public at the World Cup - without wanting to raise expectations with names."

Ghana were eliminated from the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon but are likely to revamp the squad ahead of the World Cup.

The Black Stars, considered the weakest in Group H, is focusing on strengthening the squad ahead of the mundial.

The Ghana Football Association is working around the clock to convince Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey, Chelsea's Hudson Odoi, the Inaki Williams brothers and Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah to switch allegiance and improve the squad ahead of the tournament later in the year.

Addo took over as Ghana coach after Milovan Rajevac failed to advance to the last 16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, finishing bottom of their group.

The Otto Addo led-technical team ended their contract with the Ghana Football Association after the 2022 World Cup playoffs.

The gaffer,  who has now gotten the permission to lead the Black Stars from his club Dortmund, will continue his role with George Boateng of Aston Villa U-23, Didi Dramani of Right to Dream and Chris Hughton as technical advisor.

Otto Addo will be on the touch line when Ghan host Madagascar in the opening game of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on June 1.

Ghana face Madagascar, Angola and Central Africa Republic in Group E of the qualifiers.

In the 2022 World Cup, the Black Stars will face Portugal, Uruguay and Korea Republic.

The Black Stars technical team will assess the squad during the qualifiers ahead of 2022 World Cup which kicks off in November.
