Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson survived two red cards shown to him in Brazil's draw with Ecuador on Thursday after VAR instructed the referee to reconsider his initial calls.
The former Roma man expressed his delight at the use of the technology after the game.
"I think this was the first time this has happened," said Alisson in his post-match interview.
"I am happy with the VAR, if it wasn't for the VAR we'd have been punished unfairly.
"I think my team-mates helped me a lot, they were incisive in their complaints to the referee. This shows once again the importance of using VAR in football."
The game ended in a 1-1 draw, although Brazil remain six points clear at the top of the qualifying group in South America, while Ecuador are third, six points clear of Colombia.
