EXCLUSIVE: RTU captain David Abagna Sandam sustains injury, set to be ruled out of the tournament

Published on: 17 January 2022

Real Tamale United (RTU) midfielder David Abagna Sandan has sustained an injury and is not likely to feature in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations for the Black Stars.

The Real Tamale United player who is making his debut appearance at the AFCON was expected to be one of the “secret weapons” of the Black Stars at this tournament.

Abagna is among the five local-based players named in the Black Stars squad for the tournament.

He has not featured in the tournament and is likely to be ruled out due to injury.

David Abagna Sandan is injured and did not train with the team before they move to Garoua for their next game against Comoros on Tuesday.

His impressive performances in the Ghana Premier League gave a lot of hope that he could step up and perform for the national team.

However, the player has been carrying an injury and has been seen limping during the last training session of the Black Stars.

Insiders say the injury is quite extensive and it would take a miracle for Abgna to play any part in the tournament.

Ghana arrived in Garoua on Sunday to prepare ahead of their third group game against Comoros on Tuesday.

The Black Stars need a win to progress to the next stage of the competition.
