Lindsey Horan hails Lyon's ability to 'play like Lyon' as key to Champions League victory

Lindsey Horan hailed her side's ability to 'play like Lyon' as key to them beating Barcelona in the Women's Champions League final and claim their eighth European title.

Barcelona stormed to their maiden Champions League crown in spectacular style last term, and much of the pre-game build up had the Spanish giants nailed down as favourites and labelled as successors to Lyon as European football's dominant powerhouse.

However, Lyon turned in a stunning team display to disrupt Barcelona's flow, run out 3-1 winners and wrestle back their European title.

The victory is Lyon's sixth Champions League title in seven seasons - but the first for Horan, who joined the French outfit on loan from Portland Thorns in January.

"This is what I dreamed of ever since I was a little girl watching the Men's Champions League, and now look at this stadium," Horan told DAZN at full time. "What Barcelona and Lyon brought and winning a game like this and playing against such an incredible team - it's everything.

"I don't know if it's a point to prove but it's us being us and focussing on us. They played a good game but we played like Lyon, so there you go."

Lyon burst out of the blocks and found themselves 1-0 up inside six minutes thanks to a stunning solo effort from Amandine Henry.

Ada Hegerberg doubled Lyon's advantage with a header on 23 minutes, before Catarina Macario added a third just after the half hour mark. Alexia Putellas offered Barcelona a glimmer of hope on the stroke of half time, but it proved to be just a consolation as Lyon held firm in the second 45 to see the game out.

Having lost both their Division 1 Feminine and Champions League title during the 2020/21 campaign for the first time since 2006 and 2015 respectively, Lyon have regained both this term, returning to the top on both the domestic and European stage.
