Sao Tome and Principe have been kicked out of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers for violating COVID-19 procedures in a preliminary match against Mauritius.

The Confederation of African Football claimed that Sao Tome and Principe used a player in the two-leg game who had not submitted to a mandatory pre-match COVID-19 test or provided documentation of a recent test.

This was a violation of the CAF's medical guidelines. Sao Tome and Principe won the match on aggregate 4-3.

This means Mauritius will join former champions Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau in the final round of the Afcon qualifiers.

The Sao Tome and Principe Football Federation was fined $10,000 for fielding an ineligible player, who was not named.
