SERIE A - Vlahovic refuses to take penalty but scores later

Published on: 24 October 2021

Fiorentina is in sixth place, level on points with Roma, after overcoming two previous setbacks with a thrashing of Cagliari.

Vincenzo Italiano's team had lost their previous two matches against league leaders Napoli and promoted Venezia, with the latter evoking ferocious fan protests directed at striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Before Sunday's match, fans at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence whistled their star forward, the Serb having failed to renew his contract, which is slated to expire at the end of next season.

Vlahovic, 21, refused to accept to play a penalty in the 21st minute. That made captain Cristiano Biraghi stand in to play and he put the hosts ahead.

He did, however, score his team's third goal four minutes after the break, after Nicolas Gonzalez had increased their lead three minutes before halftime.
