Defending champions Ghana endured a disappointing start in the WAFU Zone B U20 Championship which is underway in Niger.

The Black Satellites suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in an opening Group B match at the Stade Général Seyni Kountche in Niamey on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Ibrahim Muhammad and Ahmed Abudullahi in each half of the game ensured the Flying Eagles picked all three points.

With an early dominance in the game, Nigeria took the lead in the 5th minute through Muhammad who went past goalie Gregory Obeng Sekyere to slot home the opener after he was set up by Adams Olubi.

The Ghana goalkeeper was called to action as he tipped off Augustine Njoku’s teasing cross to deny Nigeria a second goal.

Black Satellites nearly pulled level in the 29th minute through skipper Zubairu Ibrahim whose thunderous strike from a free-kick was parried away by the Nigeria goalie Nathaniel Nwosu.

The Flying Eagles doubled their advantage in the 72th minute when a deflected shot from Abudullahi beat Obeng Sekyere in the goalposts.

Ghana will face Burkina Faso in their next group game on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niamey.
