Inter held away at depleted Atalanta

A depleted Atalanta side managed to hold Serie A champions and leaders Inter to a scoreless draw in Bergamo on Sunday night.

The blackout was the first Inter had suffered in 40 games, despite coming up against a La Dea who were without as many as five first-team regulars. The draw did allow Inter to extend their unbeaten run to 13 matches.

Simone Inzaghi had the luxury of a full-strength Inter to call upon and opted to leave Lautaro Martinez on the bench and start Edin Dzeko alongside Supercoppa Italia hero Alexis Sanchez after his 120th-minute winner in Wednesday's final.

Inter expectedly started the brighter of the two sides and the first half was the visitors', but they never managed to work Juan Musso as much as they might have expected to as Atalanta's defence and midfield stood relatively firm.

The hosts grew into the game in the second half and Matteo Pessina should have put them ahead only to miss when through on Samir Handanovic, while Luis Muriel and Mario Pasalic both had chances of their own as well that they probably should have done more with.

But neither goalkeeper could be beaten on the night and Atalanta will end the weekend the happier of the two.

Inter stay top and with a one-point lead over AC Milan, but the Rossoneri can leapfrog them on Monday as they host Spezia.
