Inter 'set to trigger an option to extend contract with Ashley Young until 2021'

Ashley Young looks set to extend his stay at Inter Milan, with the Serie A club looking to trigger an option to extend his contract until the summer of 2021.

Young, who moved to Inter in January for £1.3m from Manchester United, had impressed Antonio Conte in the two months of action before the coronavirus crisis paused football.

However, the 34-year-old's six-month contract was due to expire this summer, yet there is a 'mutual option' that Young and Inter must decide on for another year and there is a willingness from both parties to do a deal, according to The Telegraph.

The former England international has hit the ground running in Italy, making seven appearances at left wing back and scoring once as Inter challenge Juventus for the title.

It was announced on Thursday that Serie A will resume on June 20, with Inter currently nine points off leaders Juventus, with a game in hand.

In March, Young emphasised that he wanted to stay at the club beyond the 2019-20 season.

'I want to stay and win,' he told Italian outlet Corriere Della Sera.

'I'm learning the language, the people are very passionate. When you talk, you actually scream.

'When Conte called me, I immediately felt his passion, he transmitted it to me. It was a good opportunity and I said: "I'm going there, I want to be part of something great."

'He's not sitting down for even a moment, but seeing him like that is a boost for the players. He has a winning mentality, he is a born winner and a fighter.'

Young scored his first goal for the club in a defeat against Lazio in February, and has started every league game since arriving at the club from United, where he spent eight-and-a-half years.
