It has been a year since Atletico flop Thomas Lemar scored his last goal

Published on: 20 April 2020

Five minutes from the end in Atletico Madrid's trip to Ipurua last April, Thomas Lemar scored a vital winner in their fight to finish as LaLiga Santander's runners up.

The Frenchman came on early in the second have and made a big difference on the day, but he hasn't managed to score again or play as much of an important role for Diego Simeone since April 20, 2019.

He assisted Antoine Griezmann in a win against Valencia in the following game, but after that he's effectively had a sabbatical year.

Having previously scored against Sant Andreu in the Copa del Rey and Getafe in LaLiga Santander, that strike at Eibar could prove to be his last for Los Rojiblancos.

The more time that passes, the more than 72 million euros spent on 70 percent of Lemar's rights is questioned.

A complete failure

Lemar hadn't set the world alight before that game in Eibar, either.

He hasn't even managed an assist in his 14 Champions League appearances, and his exciting debut against Real Madrid in the European Super Cup is as good as his time at the Wanda Metropolitano has been.

Despite being given countless opportunities by Simeone, he hasn't taken advantage.

Even Juanfran has had twice as many assists in the last 12 months, while Kieran Trippier has already chipped in with four this season and Renan Lodi has served up three.

Perhaps the most damning comparison comes from Marc-Andre ter Stegen though, as the Barcelona goalkeeper has even managed two assists from his goal since Lemar's goal against Eibar.

He's offered next to nothing in his last 29 appearances, as many as 67 defenders have scored in LaLiga Santander since, and 23 have provided more assists as well.

Although he's contracted until 2023, Lemar's days in Madrid are numbered.
