'It was difficult, but same for both teams' - Maguire on Tranmere's pitch

Manchester United insisted on playing the ball on the floor in the FA Cup win over Tranmere, despite concerns about the condition of the Prenton Park pitch.

“It was difficult, but it was same for both teams," Maguire said of the pitch when speaking to BT Sport.

"We knew it was difficult coming into the game. It was hard in the warm-up but we got used to it.

"We knew we needed to get the ball down onto the ground. If we played them at their game, they'd probably beat us, so the lads have done really well to handle the conditions. It was the same for both teams so no excuses.”

Maguire, who opened the scoring for United, said the win was needed after a disappointing result in midweek.

“It was really important to get the win, coming off the back of a bad performance and result against Burnley," Maguire continued.

“We really set our stall out to put in a positive performance for the fans. We're in the next round which is what we came to do.”

“It's been a long time coming [the goal]. I've had a lot of chances this year without finding the back of the net. It's nice to help the team get into the next round.”
