Italian Football Federation hope to restart Serie A on May 20

Published on: 01 April 2020

Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), has revealed that one of the options being studied in Italy is resuming Serie A on May 20.

Football in Italy was suspended at the start of March after the country was hit by a major coronavirus outbreak.

"No one can make predictions during this health emergency," Gravina said.

"It's a unique emergency that has affected all sectors.

"But once it's been defeated, we have to move forward and football is thinking about how to restart the competition.

"The absolute priority is to complete the leagues.

"We have to be in total isolation until April 18.

"The hypothesis is to restart on May 20 or, like the latest option, at the start of June, in order to finish in July.

"There's been talk of completing the season in August and September, but I've already pointed out that I don't want to run the risk of ruining another season to save this one.

"Today, no one can make predictions, but we have to plan ahead."
