Italy climb into top 10 of FIFA Rankings

Published on: 14 July 2016

After reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, Italy have climbed back into the top 10 of the official FIFA Rankings.

The Azzurri beat the likes of Belgium and Spain during the campaign and eventually lost on penalties to Germany, and their tournament run has meant they are now placed 10th in the world, just one solitary point behind ninth-placed Brazil.

Argentina remain top despite their loss to Chile in the Copa America final, while Iceland climb up to 22nd after their amazing performance in France, and Wales are now 11th after their equally superb display meant they are the highest climbers worldwide in terms of points.

The biggest move by ranking place was made by New Zealand, who climbed up 54 places, while Belize were the worst movers, dropping 50 places.

There were no changes to the order of the top five, however Portugal’s success at the European Championship means they climb up two places, while France’s run to the final has helped them leap up ten places, both at the expense of Spain and Brazil.

The French and the Italians have taken the places of Uruguay and Austria, who both drop out of the top 10 and fall into 12th and 21st respectively.

The top 10 looks like this:
1. Argentina
2. Belgium
3. Colombia
4. Germany
5. Chile
6. Portugal
7. France
8. Spain
9. Brazil
10. Italy

The next update to the rankings will be made on August 11, however there are no major international fixtures until then due to pre-season training for most worldwide leagues, while the Azzurri’s next game is a friendly with France on September 1.
