James Rodriguez and Everton smile again with tough win at Fulham

Published on: 22 November 2020

Carlo Ancelotti's Everton side were back in action following the international break and they visited Fulham at Craven Cottage, winning 3-2. This was seen as an opportunity to return to winning ways after losing three Premier League games in a row.

Their motivation was clear to see as high pressing saw Richarlison win the ball back after just 40 seconds and set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the opener. After a quarter of an hour, the home side responded as a good passing move allowed Bobby de Cordova-Reid to beat Jordan Pickford and equalise.

The next two goals were for Everton as James grew increasingly involved in attack. It was Lucas Digne, though, who assisted both of them, first for Calvert-Lewin in the 29th minute and then for Abdoulaye Doucoure in the 36th minute.

Up 3-1, Everton started to manage possession well and Richarlison had two chances to extend his side's advantage, but Alphonse Areola was able to deny him. Ruben Loftus-Cheek's introduction on the hour mark sparked Fulham into some life as he won a 68th minute penalty that Ivan Cavaleiro missed as he slipped. Then, just two minutes later, he appeared in the penalty area to make it 3-2 thanks to an assist from Ademola Lookman.

With the advantage down to one goal, Ancelotti made some substitutions of his own and took James off. It had been a good outing for the playmaker as he participated in two goals, even if he hadn't starred quite like he did in other matches.

This reaction saw the Toffees hold on to their lead and they go home with three points in the bag, taking them to 16 points from their first nine matches of the season. Fulham, on the other hand, are still down near the bottom of the table with just four points to their name.
