Jesse Lingard & David de Gea react to last-minute heroics in Man Utd win over West Ham

Published on: 19 September 2021

Jesse Lingard and David de Gea were the heroes of the hour for Manchester United on Sunday, scoring a late winner and saving a last-minute penalty respectively to clinch a vital 2-1 win over West Ham United.

The two players enjoyed their own redemption arcs, with the England international making amends for his costly midweek mistake against Young Boys, and the Spanish shot-stopper saving his first spot-kick in 40 attempts.

it was a crazy final few minutes for Man Utd, but despite almost ending the game with only a point, they collected all three, with Lingard the hero. The former West Ham loanee thanked the hosts for their 'brilliant reception' during his interview with Sky Sports, but maintained that it's time to 'move on with Man Utd.'

"I got a brilliant reception when I came on," Lingard said. "I had a good time here but I have to move on with Man Utd and do my best with Man Utd. I've been working hard and to overcome last week wasn't easy.

"Mistakes happen in football, you have to overcome those things. Things happen and you've got to bounce back from them."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased for substitute Lingard at the final whistle, stating that the midfielder 'knuckled down' after making his error in midweek.

"So happy for Jesse," Solskjaer said. "He had a tough evening on Tuesday, he knuckled down, he's a positive lad, so happy for him. A good turn by Jesse, good finish."

De Gea was equally as delighted with his contribution and crucial penalty save, while praising West Ham for giving Man Utd such a 'really tough game'.

"It was the last minute, I made the save. A massive three points for us. Going through my head was, 'save the ball. Help the team to win.' It was a really tough game, both teams had good chances, again a great goal from Jesse.

"It is a massive three points. In the dressing room we said the three points were the most important thing."

West Ham star Angelo Ogbonna spoke out over Mark Noble's part in the final few minutes of drama, after he came on to take the decisive penalty, but fluffed his lines with his first touch of the ball.

The Italian defender admitted that the whole team 'feels sorry for him' and backed the midfielder to score the next attempt.

"We all feel sorry for him, this is football and you have to accept it. He is experienced enough to take any penalty, the next one he will score for sure."

West Ham coach David Moyes insisted that bringing Noble on to take the penalty was the right decision, declaring their captain to be 'one of the best takers in the Premier League and Europe.'

"We got a penalty kick and I have one of the best penalty takers in the Premier League and Europe. I think if I hadn't made the decision I'd have been more annoyed with myself.

"I asked him and he said I'm ready, he has a great record, why would we not? We've missed a few recently so I thought I'd take the opportunity to bring Mark on."
