Ghana captain John Mensah lavished praise on his ‘brother’ Asamoah Gyan over his nomination for the World Player of the Year award insisting the striker deserves the accolade from Fifa.

Gyan, who is Mensah’s team-mate at English side Sunderland, was named in Fifa’s 23-man shortlist for the top award.

The Black Stars duo who play for English side Sunderland have had a long relationships as they have played for several clubs together.

In a statement on his official website, Mensah says Gyan deserves the ward because of his performance at the global World Cup tournament.

“I want to congratulate my brother and team-mate Asamoah Gyan for his nomination,” Mensah said in the statement.

“He really deserves it because scoring three goals in a World Cup is not an easy task.

“Asamoah has come of age and we should recognize that, he is a lad who can be match to any striker of world.

“I was not surprised of his inclusion in the Fifa World Player of the Year shortlist,” the Sunderland defender stressed.”

Mensah is confident that Gyan will defy all the big names in the list to join George Weah as the second African player to win the award.

“I am wishing my brother the best of luck. I am praying that he comes out as a winner and I believe it will come to pass.”

Gyan’s performance during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he scored three goals to aid the Black Stars’ campaign to the quarter finals contributed to his nomination.
