John Mensah praises selfless Asamoah Gyan

John Mensah used the example of Asamoah Gyan to represent the togetherness running through the Sunderland squad.

The centre-back praised in-form compatriot Gyan after the striker set up Jordan Henderson’s winner against West Ham on Sunday.

Gyan has scored five goals in his last six games but turn provider to lay on Henderson’s first strike of the campaign pinpoint feed across the box.

And he felt the striker’s assist summed up Sunderland’s togetherness as they claimed maximum points with a resolute team showing.

"Asamoah did well," said Mensah. "A good player is the one also give assist as well as goals.

"If you want to score by yourself, it is not good for the team, but what Asamoah did was good for himself and the team.

"Our victory came from all of us, not individuals.”

The pair are usually at the head of the queue to lead –post match celebrations by playing Gyan’s own song- African girls.

But although the track didn’t grace the stereo on this occasion, Mensah revealed Gyan's beat have been receiving airtime at the training ground.

"We played his song at training on Saturday and some of the players were dancing. Asamoah and I were singing and also Bardo (Phil Bardsley)"
