Jordan Pickford in line to replace De Gea at Man Utd

Jordan Pickford is in line to replace David de Gea as Manchester United goalkeeper at the end of the season, according to Fabrizio Romano.

De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and there is currently no plans to renew his deal.

That seems unlikely to change as it is widely reported that new Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag is not the biggest fan of De Gea.

The Spaniard has split the critics ever since joining Man Utd from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

De Gea has enjoyed spells of brilliance but also periods where he has been very poor.

It is expected that Man Utd will replace him at the end of the 2022-23 season, and Romano believes that Everton goalkeeper Pickford could be the man to succeed him.

What did Romano say about Pickford?

“Manchester United will decide on new contracts in the next months, before January – nothing has been decided yet,” Romano said in his Caught Offside column.

“For sure the De Gea situation has to be clarified, but I’m told on both player and club side there’s still no decision.

“I think Pickford is a great goalkeeper for long term, while short term Keylor Navas could be a great opportunity for many clubs.”

Pickford has been at Everton since joining from Sunderland in 2017.

His club form has not always been brilliant but he has largely impressed while playing for the England national team.

Pickford was England’s number one at World Cup 2018 and Euro 2020 and played an important role in the Three Lions reaching the semi-finals and then the final, respectively.

He has won 45 caps for England and is only 28.
