José Peseiro, the Portuguese coach who took the reins of the Nigerian Super Eagles twenty-two months ago, has made the surprising decision to step down from his position.

The announcement came on Friday, March 1, as Peseiro conveyed his departure in a heartfelt message.

In his message, Peseiro expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Nigerian football team, citing the privilege of working with talented players and experiencing the passion of Nigerian football fans. However, he also highlighted the challenges and pressures that come with such a demanding role.

The Nigerian Football Federation has yet to announce Peseiro's successor, leaving fans and pundits speculating on who will lead the Super Eagles into their next chapter.

“Yesterday we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and an honor to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of accomplishment," he tweeted on X.

We would like to express our gratitude to Sir Amaju Pinnick (the president who signed us), President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, the NFF, all the Staff, and especially all the PLAYERS, with whom leading has been a great pleasure.

“Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you.” he added.
