Former Ghana youth star Joseph Adjei recovered from injury to play a key role for Al Malkiya in their 2-1 victory over Al Suwaiq in the opening fixture of the AFC Cup on Tuesday.

Adjei was a major doubt ahead of the much-anticipated clash against the Omani side after picking an ankle injury in their 3-1 loss against Al-Shabbab in the Bahraini Premier League last week.

The 23-year-old miraculously recovered from the setback to man the midfield for Khalifa Sports City Stadium outfit as they defied the bookies odds to pick first three points in the competition.

Malkiya were handed an early blow in the match after Muhsen Al Ghassani put the hosts ahead in the 23rd minute.

But Bahraini forward Sayed Hashim levelled the scoreline for Malkiya with a long-range drive in the 31st minute before Issa Abd Al Wahab Al Berri sealed the victory in the 59th minute.

Adjei came close to registering his name on the scoresheet late in the game but his powerful header skewed off the upright.

He has been a key figure in the club since joining last year after a brief stint with American second-tier side Oklahoma City Energy.
