Julen Lopetegui emerges as Wolves option after being sacked by Sevilla

Published on: 06 October 2022

Sevilla have confirmed the departure of Julen Lopetegui after a disappointing start to their season, but he is already in contention to take over at Wolves after they dispensed with Bruno Lage.

Lopetegui was appointed in 2019 and led Sevilla to the Europa League title. He has also qualified for the Champions League every season he has been with them.

However, at this early stage of the season, the club are lying 17th in La Liga with just one win to their name. The midweek thrashing by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League was the final straw.

Sevilla were already making plans to replace Lopetegui, with former boss Jorge Sampaoli the man who is coming in to replace him at the helm.

But ex-Real Madrid and Spain coach Lopetegui may not get too much down time as representatives have been speaking to Wolves about him taking charge at Molineux.

Sources with knowledge of the Wolves job hunt have confirmed to 90min that Lopetegui is indeed being seriously considered. But they insist they are taking their time and that there are other candidates who are also being given due consideration.

Former Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco, as 90min revealed this week, Ruben Amorim, Bo Svensson, Paulo Fonseca and Rafa Benitez are all on Wolves' list of options.
