Memphis Depay has told Louis van Gaal that the Netherlands have more chances of winning the 2022 Qatar World Cup if he’s fully fit.

Depay has started on the bench in the Netherlands’ two group stage games against Senegal and Ecuador due to lack of fitness.

On both occasions he came on as substitute, he was more or less uneventful but somehow the Dutchmen won Senegal 2-0 and managed a 1-1 draw against Ecuador.

The former Manchester United midfielder has confirmed that he’s becoming better and better and while he admits that PSV forward Cody Gakpo, who is also a transfer target for Man United, has performed well, he thinks the Netherlands have more chances of going far in the competition if he’s at his best.

“I keep feeling better and better,” Memphis Depay said as quoted by De Telegraaf. “Luckily other players are standing up, such as Cody Gakpo. But with a fit Memphis we stand more chance.”

The Netherlands will play their last group stage game next week when they come up against host nation, Qatar.

A win over Qatar will see them finish the group stage as the winners of Group A.
