Real Madrid Set To Announce New Captain Following Karim Benzema’s Departure
Real Madrid is currently faced with the task of appointing a new club captain following Karim Benzema’s decision to bid farewell to the Bernabeu at the conclusion of his contract this month.
Benzema, who assumed the role of vice-captain in 2021 following the departure of Sergio Ramos, was subsequently elevated to the captaincy after Marcelo’s exit from the club last summer.
As the search for a new captain intensifies, all indications point towards veteran home-grown defender Nacho receiving the coveted designation. Having been an integral part of the squad’s leadership group this season, alongside the likes of Benzema and Luka Modric, Nacho has already donned the captain’s armband on multiple occasions in recent months.
According to The Athletic, Nacho’s imminent contract extension, expected to span one year, will be accompanied by the responsibility of being the full-time captain. Carlo Ancelotti, the Madrid manager, has publicly expressed his confidence in Nacho’s future at the club, affirming that the defender is set to remain beyond his current deal, which expires at the end of this month.
A product of Madrid’s youth system, Nacho, who hails from the Spanish capital, joined the ranks of Real’s academy at the tender age of 11. He rose through the ranks and cemented his place in the senior squad under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho, making his first-team debut in 2011. Since then, Nacho has showcased his versatility as a defender, often stepping in seamlessly across the backline.
