Ghana U-23 defender Kingsley Fobi has revealed receiving encouraging messages from some Black Stars players after missing a crucial penalty at the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

The right-back who plays for Spanish side SD Formentera missed from the spot against South Africa in the third-place playoff as Black Satellites failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The match finished 2-2 and had to be decided via penalty shootout. The South Africans won 6-5 to secure Olympics ticket as Ghana failed to qualify for the first time since 2004.

“When I missed that penalty, I was really sad and at that point, I felt like Ghana is on top of me but then I got messages from some of Black Stars players try to encourage me,” he said.

“After that game, I don’t remember coming on Twitter but then I was receiving a lot of screenshots from my friends on comments made by people on social media.”
