Korea Republic lose it late in front of record crowd

Yongin: A last gasp winner from Rakel Hönnudóttir saw Korea Republic fall to a 3-2 defeat to Iceland, as Yoon duk-yeo's side continued their FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019 preparations on Saturday.

Playing a home friendly for the first time since 2015, Korea Republic drew an unprecedented home crowd of 15,839, but couldn't hold on for a positive result after recovering from two goals behind to level the tie at 2-2 with less than 20 minutes remaining.

The record crowd was a vast improvement on the attendances for the two-game friendly series played against Russia in the build-up to the last FIFA Women's World Cup, which drew galleries of 3,177 in Incheon and 6,899 in Daejon in 2015.

In the first of two friendly matches between the sides this week, the Scandinavians - who failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup - opened the scoring thanks to a virtuoso solo effort from Berglind Björg Þorvaldsdóttir in the 28th minute.

The PSV Eindhoven forward doubled her tally after being supplied by US-based Gunnhildur Jónsdóttir 12 minutes later, giving the hosts a mountain to climb at 2-0 down at the break.

The hosts burst into action in the early stages of the second half, pulling a goal back through Yeo Min-ji in the 53rd minute, before substitute Lee Geum-min brought the Koreans level with a second goal in the 72nd minute.

Yoon's side chased a winner, but Hönnudóttir ensured the visitors would be the ones celebrating when she took advantage of goalkeeper Kim Jung-mi's parry to force home a 92nd minute winner.

Korea Republic fans will have another chance to cheer on the national team when they meet the same opponents in Chuncheon on Tuesday.
