Korea Republic claimed Asia’s fifth and final qualification spot for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019⢠after a 5-0 victory over the Philippines in Monday’s match for fifth place at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Jordan 2018.
The Taeguk Ladies broke the deadlock on 34 minutes when Jang Selgi struck a right-footed shot into the top corner of the Philippines’ goal. Just before half-time, the East Asian side doubled their advantage when Lee Mina converted from close range.
Any hopes that the Philippines had in turning that deficit around were dashed when Korea Republic scored a third goal through Lim Seonjoo on 56 minutes, as she converted Jeon Gaeul’s set-piece. Ten minutes later, Cho Sohyun headed home Jeon’s corner for a fourth goal before Cho sealed victory with a late penalty.
France 2019 will be Korea Republic’s third appearance at a Women’s World Cup and their second straight qualification to the world finals. Their best showing was at Canada 2015 when they reached the Round of 16.
They join fellow Asian qualifiers Australia, China PR, Japan, and Thailand in booking their tickets to women’s football’s showpiece event.
