Kotoko chief claims ex-executives sabotaging club

Troubled Kumasi Asante Kotoko Board Chairman, Dr K. K. Sarpong, has made a first diagnosis of the club’s problems, pointing accusing fingers at some old executives as those behind the poor outing of the Porcupine Warriors.

The saboteurs, as the Chairman bluntly put it, were spotted wearing long faces when the club took a 2-0 lead in last Sunday’s Premier League match against league leaders, Bechem Chelsea.

“However, immediately Chelsea started scoring, the saboteurs were seen smiling, expressing joy at the loss of Kotoko,” he alleged. Kotoko lost the match 2-3 to slump to 13th position in the 16-club league.

Dr Sarpong descended heavily on his detractors who, according him, were bent on making sure that his administration failed, seeking to break the front of the once-feared Ghanaian club.

The Chairman’s assertions corroborated views held by panellists on Asempa, a private FM station in Accra, that he needed to do away with some of the old executives who were part of his administration or else it will be difficult for the club to rediscover its traditional strength.

Currently, Ben Nti, Jarvis Pepprah, all management members, as well as Kwame Baah-Nuako, who officially is not part of either the board or management, but one of the old executives, are working closely with Dr Sarpong.

The Board Chairman was diplomatic in his reference to the saboteurs but claimed they know themselves.

However, it is felt in some circles that Dr Sarpong could not be absolved from blame over what is happening to the club since a section of the board members have threatened to resign on the grounds that the Chairman, together with his “special aide,” Baah-Nuako, have allegedly hijacked the club, taking major decisions without recourse to the rest of the members.

The internal wranglings within the rank and file of Kotoko have heightened as some of the old executives are alleged to be lobbying to be reinstated to take over the commanding heights of the club.

The Life Patron of the club, the Asantehene Nana Osei Tutu II, is yet to take a decision on the matter.
