Asante Kotoko are struggling to hold onto big names  ahead of the defence of their Premier League title next season.

Five key players  including Awal Mohammed, Yaw Frimpong, Kofi Nti Boakye, Ahmed Toure and Ben Acheampong are all rumoured to be on their way out of the club.

The defensive duo of Mohammed and Frimpong are reported to be closing in on a move to a top South African Premier League side.

Mohammed is on the verge of signing for Maritzburg United.

Strikers Ben Acheampong and Kofi Nti Boakye are also close to sigining for some unammed clubs abroad while Ahmed Toure could seek a move away from the club over his frosty relationship with head coach Maxwell Konadu.

The Ivorian claims he has been treated like an outcast and has not hidden his frustration at the club.

Kotoko will rely on their experienced troops to aid their title defence next season and more crucially their ambition of winning their third continental title as they make a return to the Caf Champions League for the first time in six years.

But the situation is becoming murkier by the day as the players are anxious to seek  new adventures elsewhere.

“We are likely going to lose some of our key players. I know Awal and Yaw Frimpong are almost gone,” Board Member Alhaji AbuLamine told Accra-based Peace FM

“Ben Acheampong is also going for trials while I also know Kofi Nti Boakye is also on his way out. We already know Baba Abdul Rahman has signed for a German club,”

“The difficulty is that you identify these players and the next minute, they are on their way out of the country for trials,"

“You can look at the situation of Rashid Sumaila and Uriah Asante for instance. We spoke to them extensively only for us to be told they were going outside."

Head coach Maxwell Konadu has been told that money is available for recruitment. But his position remains unchanged in that he will onl add to his squad if he feels any potential sigining can benefit the team in the long term, rather than arrive as a short-term fix with little prospect of improving the squad.
