Kotoko's Toure ditches Ghana for Ivory Coast

Published on: 10 November 2011

Asante Kotoko striker Ahmed Toure will no longer pursue his nationality switch in order to play for Ghana, sources close to the player have told GHANAsoccernet.com.

Rather, the 24-year-old has decided to feature for his native Cote d'Ivoire, thus beating an astonishing u-turn following his public declaration of his wish to play for the Black Stars.

Officials of the Ivorian football federation met with the player on Thursday to assure him of a place with the national team in future.

And with the nationality switch process believed to have been initiated by Kotoko a few months ago moving at a slow pace, Toure has decided to feature for the country of his birth.

The news will definitely disappoint many especially the Kotoko fans who were hoping their idol who they believe is good enough for a Black Stars spot get cleared to play for Ghana.

Where is the ditching? He openly declared his intention to play for Ghana but we were taking forever to get his nationality switch done. The Ivorian FA acted fast and convinced him to make a U-turn period. The Ivorian FA are not as slow as ours. When they wanted YEBOAH (their national goalie)? they acted very fast. What our FA will do from now is up to them. He has not featured for them yet so we still have a chance. He plies his trade here so we can do some convincing too. Of course this all boils down to the question of whether we need him or not.

He doesnt need to play for Ghana. Let him go play for his own country. Its the right thing to do, just as we always encourage our european born players to come play for ghana. Good decision Toure, no hard feelings

From the news,no concrete deal has been made yet so why the worry? The player had made it clear that he wanted to play for Ghana so I don't think we would have problem luring him quickly into the stars b4 the Ivorians take him away. There4 the GFA must do something quick as they do in the case of foreign-born Ghanaians.

Go away with your stupid story. There is no ditching here. He is an Ivorian he deserves to play for his native country where he can be comfortable. Ghana will beat them anyway. Ivory coast always choke when it counts. USA

Cheer up guys again. just yesterday, i was here telling people that all players who wanted to or have opted to play for Ghana have an underlying reason for doing so and i also specifically noted that if ever Ahmed Toure has ever thought or had the slightest inkling that he could ever play for star studded Ivory coast, he will never try the switch. In less than 24 hours, he has proved me right. So leave all those who have chosen to go. Let them go. We had them , we symbiotically used each other and we mutually benefited from each other. period

The boy is confused and i don't think is a good recipe to lure him into our national team. he is spoilt for choice and have chosen the country of his birth so be it....we need dedicated dyed in the wool Ghanaians who will always choose us over all the luxuries in the world but upon second thoughts, why won't Cote d'Ivoire call him direct but rather assure him? i smell propaganda from Oseikrom to smuggle him into the Black Stars...we ain't bulging..he needs to satisfy immigration laws first and not players who can't say national pledge or sing our anthem...

He was using Ghana to get call up from CIV that's why he quickly jumped for the opportunity. If he really love Ghana as he claims, he will definitely wait. He is still young. Good things comes to those who wait. Secondly, doing very well in the local league is not a guarantee that he can translate that in a national team. Where are Kweku Essien, Berkos etc. Goalkeepers and defenders we have in Ghana are not world class, how many of them play consistently with the Black Stars? He is using Ghana league to develop himself and possibly secure a club in overseas. He better keep quiet and play his game, he is talking too much.

This guy is not good enough. We've seen far better clinical finishers than him. Where is Eric Bekoe. Ahmed did not last in north africa but eric is there. if ahmed was good enough he should have in a top european side by now or even get a call up into the elephants. forget this dude. he claims he wants to play for us but wears his Ivorian band around in Ghana. We r not fools
